Borrowers are excited to have multiple plans to receive student loan debt relief. Unfortunately, these initiatives have overlapping deadlines, leaving many borrowers confused.
Here are the key dates and deadlines to know.
In August, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a Student Debt Relief Plan that includes one-time student loan debt relief of $10,000 or $20,000 targeted to low- and middle-income families.
Deadline to apply is: Dec. 31, 2023
The application to request debt relief was released online Oct. 18, 2022. As noted above, you’ll have until the end of 2023 to submit your application. However, if you want to receive this debt relief before the student loan payment pause ends, Federal Student Aid (FSA) suggests applying by mid-November 2022.
Do you qualify? There are six simple steps to find out.
The “limited PSLF waiver” refers to temporary changes to Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program rules. For a limited time, borrowers can receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF.
Deadline to apply is: Oct. 31, 2022
You must complete all of the steps of the PSLF Help Tool on or before Oct. 31, 2022 to be considered for the PSLF waiver. Beginning Nov. 1, 2022, the normal program requirements for both PSLF and TEPSLF will be reinstated.
In our three-part blog series on PSLF, we cover what it is, how to apply, and how to take advantage of the limited PSLF waiver.
To provide student loan borrowers necessary relief during the COVID-19 pandemic, federal student loan payments and interest have been paused since March 2020.
Pause expires: Dec. 31, 2022
Federal student loan payments will restart and interest rates will be reinstated after Dec. 31, 2022. Borrowers will receive a billing statement that includes payment amount and due date at least 21 days before the first payment is due.
